A Little Information about Our Solid Wood Furniture

As a purchaser of solid wood, we want you to be fully informed of its natural characteristics. Solid wood products cannot be manufactured without these characteristics; therefore it is important that you find them acceptable. All our wood products are handcrafted specifically to your order.

Wood Characteristics

  • Wood is a natural product. Natural variations in grain, colour and checking are to be expected.
  • Some trees vary in colour from shades of white, pink, green, gray and black.
  • Knots of various sizes are to be expected.
  • Grain patterns vary from one species to another from almost non-existent to busy, grainy and full of character.
  • Some will have worm tracks, pitch marks and mineral streaks.

Colour Staining Natural Woods

  • Some natural woods absorb stain readily; others practically refuse to absorb.
  • Some stains tend to darken over time.
  • Our manufacturers use only the finest kiln-dried solid woods available. As no two pieces of wood are exactly the same, there may be variations in colour.
  • Staining adds colour while allowing the natural wood grain and texture to show through. The final result is dependent upon the wood species and characteristics.

Stain Matching

A perfect stain match can never be achieved! Please refer to the above information on colour staining natural woods.

Heat, Humidity & Solid Wood Furniture

Did you know that up to half of the weight of freshly sawn wood is water? Furniture is crafted from wood that is carefully dried, retaining just enough moisture for the furniture to properly acclimate to the relative humidity in your home. The wood in furniture continues to exchange moisture with the air, shrinking and expanding in response to changes in relative humidity.

Like your own skin, solid wood furniture’s natural response to dry air is to lose moisture and shrink a bit. For example, the halves of an extension table may separate slightly. This will correct itself as the relative humidity rises, and the wood absorbs enough ambient moisture to expand slightly. However, if the air is extremely dry, solid wood may lose too much moisture and warp. This can be prevented by controlling the amount of ambient moisture in your home.

On the other hand, if you don’t have an air conditioner or dehumidifier, your home’s relative moisture humidity may get too high. Parts of your wood furniture may absorb excess moisture from the air and expand, causing drawers to stick. Once again, this will correct itself as your home’s relative humidity decreases. The furniture’s quality and durability are not affected by these natural changes.

Store table leaves as close as possible to the table. Keep them in an upstairs closet rather than in a damp basement, so that the table leaves are adjusting to the same relative humidity as the table.

Ways to Ensure Your Solid Wood is Treasured for Years to Come

All our wood products are finished with a 3-step procedure of stain, seal and lacquer, eliminating the need for furniture sprays, cleaners, oils or waxes. We encourage you to follow these guidelines to maintain the beautiful appearance of your furniture.

  • Never use abrasive cleaners or household cleaning products on any of our wood products.
  • Regular care, maintenance and cleaning should consist of wiping with a damp, soft clean cloth and wiping again with a dry, soft clean cloth.
  • Blot all spills immediately. Keep solvents, alcohol, nail polish and polish removers away from your furniture surfaces.
  • When dusting, always lift lamps and other objects (do not slide them).
  • For your comfort and to protect your furniture, use a humidifier in the winter and an air conditioner in the summer to keep the relative humidity in your home at 25-30%.
  • Avoid placing solid wood furniture in front of direct sunlight, radiators, fireplaces or any other heat source.
  • Lift furniture to move it; don’t drag it.
  • Open and close doors, drawers and lids gently.
